Compass Group Denmark has joined the Danish Alliance for Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture. Alongside other stakeholders across the value chain, we will work to ensure more sustainable stocks of marine life and plants, and especially focus on promoting a more varied “blue diet” for Danes, including seaweed and other local fish species.
Denmark remains one of the EU’s largest fishing nations, with 8,500 kilometers of coastline and landings worth about DKK 3.5 billion. However, many fish in Danish waters are struggling, and the biodiversity beneath the surface is under pressure. This is due to factors such as climate change, decades of overfishing, and the release of nutrients and waste, which harm the underwater environment. At the same time, Danes lack knowledge and the courage to try new species – the so-called “blue revolution.” This means that there’s a need to explore the many types of fish, seafood, and seaweed caught in Danish waters and aquaculture.
To accelerate the progress towards a sustainable fishing and aquaculture sector, stakeholders including food producers, Danish retail, organizations, and more have come together to launch the Danish Alliance for Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture.
“We are delighted to be part of the new alliance. Sustainability is an essential part of Compass Group Denmark’s DNA. Every day, we serve food in our 350 cafeterias across Denmark, and we would be happy to contribute ‘blue food’ to the menu for the benefit of the environment. We are looking forward to getting started with the collaboration in a strong community across the entire value chain,” says Anne Ruberg, Procurement Director at Compass Group Denmark.
An Ambitious Alliance The alliance is a committed partnership with a shared vision. It aims to work towards sustainable production, biodiversity, jobs, and animal welfare to ensure a “blue diet” for future generations. This purpose aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14:
“We, along with the most important players in the fishing and maritime sector, have been preparing for a couple of years, and now we are ready to announce our ambitious alliance. We believe that this alliance, spanning industry organizations, food producers, retailers, and organizations, can help secure a more sustainable fishery for the benefit of future generations,” says Nanna Callisen Bang, Director of Ethical Trading Denmark. She emphasizes that the alliance welcomes more participants who share the same vision.
Since 2018, Ethical Trading Denmark, in collaboration with NORION and with support from the VELUX FOUNDATION, has brought together those with knowledge and experience in creating a more sustainable fishing industry in Denmark. Now, they are ready to engage in a committed partnership with a shared vision. Read more about the alliance: https://etiskhandel.dk/aktiviteter/alliancer/dansk-alliance-for-baeredygtig-fiskeri/
