Every year during the week of Stop Food Waste Day, we focus on reducing food waste across our Compass Group canteens – and this year was no exception.
Throughout the week, our canteens participated in this year’s Food Waste Challenge, with strong efforts across the board. But one canteen stood out in particular:
Keylane achieved the lowest level of food waste in the competition with only 10.6 grams per guest, and we visited them to celebrate the achievement with a diploma and a prize for the kitchen team.
Kitchen Manager Nickolaj Hansen shared his thoughts after the award ceremony:
“We have had a strong focus on food waste this week and had great conversations with our guests about it – it’s better to go back for seconds than to take too much on your plate. Guests became much more engaged in the competition than I expected, so it’s great to receive recognition for the efforts made across the whole site.”
Looking at the overall results across all Compass Group canteens, there is plenty to be proud of:
• Approximately 4.8 tonnes less food waste than during the same week last year in the Food Waste Challenge (a reduction of 23%)
• Savings in food purchasing equivalent to approximately 10 tonnes of CO2e
• A 15% reduction in food waste per guest, from 63.91 grams in 2025 to 54.19 grams in 2026 during the same week
A big thank you to all our kitchen teams, who work every day to ensure that the food we prepare is also the food that gets eaten.
