“Make the Organic Food Label Permanent”

This is the headline of a commentary we co-signed in Børsen on September 16, 2025.

Together with 19 other stakeholders from across the food value chain, we are united in a clear call: Remove the recurring uncertainty around the Organic Food Label now.

The government has allocated funding for the Organic Food Label in 2026, which we welcome. But what happens afterwards?

For us at Compass Group, the Organic Food Label is an important tool in our daily operations across our 350 canteens. Experience shows that when kitchens work with the label:

  • Kitchen managers incorporate more organic products into their menus

  • Plant-based and green options are given higher priority

  • Food waste is reduced

However, implementing the label requires preparation and investment: new purchasing agreements, new systems, adjusted menus, and staff learning to work with more vegetables and less waste. This work will not get started if funding is only short-term.

The Organic Food Label is popular, has been copied by other EU countries, and demonstrates that Denmark can lead the way. It’s time to remove the uncertainty and make the label permanent.
