There are leaders who deliver results – and leaders who help people grow.
Thomas Martina is one of them. He has just been named Compass Group’s Best Leader in this quarter’s Be A Star recognition programme.
As the nominations from his colleagues were read aloud, Thomas was visibly moved and brought to tears.
“I honestly never expected people to take the time to nominate me. It means so much that my colleagues have put into words why they believe I deserve this award,” he says.
Thomas has been part of Compass Group since 2019 and has served as Head Chef at several locations. His passion for gastronomy, however, began much earlier.
His grandfather owned a restaurant in Tivoli, sparking Thomas’ interest in cooking from a young age.
After qualifying as a chef in 1998, he embarked on a career that has led him to his current role as Head Chef.
For Thomas, great leadership starts with being present.
“If you’re having a difficult day, tell me.”
That mindset shapes the entire kitchen. Team members are encouraged to share their ideas and leave their mark on the menu.
“If one of my team members wants to create a particular dish, then that’s the dish we’ll make. I give them the responsibility because, as a leader, it’s important to let go a little and give people the opportunity to grow.”
Thomas believes people thrive when they have the opportunity to work with what they are passionate about. For him, good leadership is about recognising each individual and creating the conditions for everyone to succeed.
Congratulations to Thomas on this well-deserved recognition!
